Red spotted toads occur around the lower tinajas of the Tinajas Altas, and possibly higher up. These little guys are loud all out of proportion to their small size (1-1.5 inches long), and at favorable times can be heard loudly a quarter of a mile away. They are found throughout the desert at places where water is frequently present for long enough periods for them to complete the life cycle from adulthood to eggs to tadpoles to adults. During drought periods, the toads will burrow into crevices and other such places that tend to provide enough moisture for survival.
