Start out the search by making only one or a few choices. If a large number of species comes up, then progressively make additional choices one at a time until the list is manageable.
Don't expect the search to lead you all the way to the single species you are trying to identify. The search page is intended only to narrow down the number of species that have to be checked in the bird list to a manageable level.
Usually, a successful search involves trial and error. If making certain choices does not lead you to an identification of what your unknown bird appears to be, go back and modify the search by changing choices one at a time until something comes up that looks right.
Some birds may be seen that are not on the list.
